Now This Would Be Neat
"Mets Said to Be Looking Into an MLS Franchise."I can't remember whether or not it's cool to be interested in MLS these days, but I dig it. Only I just can't see myself commuting to New Jersey to root for a team named after an energy drink (though I'll admit that at least they're finally starting to put a pretty good product on the field).
But a team in Queens owned by the Mets? I'm there.

3-0
The only thing better than starting the season with a sweep of the World Champions is seeing the great Pujols rung up on the same kind of 12-6 curveball that put the Mets away in last year's NLCS.
Tonight belonged to John Maine. But I'm not sure there's anything in baseball more beautiful than last night's hero, Orlando Hernandez, in his crane-like windup:

Well, there's one thing more beautiful: a sweep of the Atlanta Braves. C'mon you Mets...

The Most Wonderful Time of the Year
Last year was an easy season to be a Mets fan. Right up until that Adam Wainwright curveball, that is - when it all suddenly became very difficult.
But really - when your team opens up an insurmountable division lead by
May, you're in for a pretty pleasant season. It almost certainly won't so breezy this year, but
so far so good.
Now let's just see about getting Lastings Milledge into Right.

Two More Months
John Shea (soon to be renamed John
Citifield) at ESPN has the Mets - newly reinforced from the right side by the Alou signing - ranked first in his
list of the top lineups in baseball going into the season. I'll take it, despite a sneaking suspicion that he's just being contrarian by picking an NL team. But his number two choice? The Cubs.
The Cubs? Really? Better than the Indians? Better than the
Yankees? I carry no water for the Great Pinstriped Evil, but I just don't see how they're outgunned by the
Cubs.
Anyway, h/t to
Amazin' Avenue, where there's a
fun little thread speculating on how Willie will stack the lineup with Alou in the mix. Break up the lefty/righty pattern? Move Paul LoDuca out of the 2-spot? Rotate it based on a platoon in the corner outfield positions? I vote for number three, I think. Though of course you're not paying Alou all that money to sit out half the year.

Willie Gets His Due
Via
this diary at Amazin' Avenue... The Mets and Willie Randolph have agreed to a
$5.65 million, three-year contract that will keep the team's manager in Queens through 2009, with an option for an additional year.
I know people have criticized Randolph's in-game management, and I haven't totally been in love with every decision he's made, but that's a small part of the manager's job anyway. The important thing is his personnel management skills, and there I think Willie's been fantastic. He's not the only reason the Mets did so well last year, but he was a big part of it, so congrats to Omar Minaya and Fred Wilpon for doing the right thing and bringing him back under a real contract.
April's only three months away...

Good Lord
Barry Zito to the Giants for seven years and $126 million.
I liked the idea of him with the Mets, but frankly I'm amused by the notion of the Giants taking on roughly the equivilant of the Bolivian national debt to hire a guy who, while good, is not exactly Sandy Koufax.
It's a seller's market out there.
